3rd January 1826

Papa came back home with a sample of the Ventilating Hat. I examined the article in question and found it a little heavy, with some peculiar little holes atop the crown. Nonetheless, there can be no doubt it is admirably constructed and finished with a good beaver felt. Papa then asked me if I wanted to purchase a new hat. I was obliged to remind him that he had not given me any pocket money since Christmas. Mama tutted very loudly.

Ten o’clock p.m.

Pa came up to my room and said he was very sorry about the pocket money; that it was not at all fair on me; and that he would pay me back using all means at his disposal – and so has given me the hat gratis.
